The effects of radiation on polymers have been studied for many years. When polymers are subjected to ultraviolet light or ionizing radiation, chain scission and crosslinking are possible. The radiation degradations of several methacrylate type polymers were investigated. The primary polymer studied was polymethacrylamide (PMAAm). materials, but a general empirical conclusion for polymers with carbon chains is that crosslinking occurs if each carbon carries at least one hydrogen atom, whereas if a tetra substituted carbon is present scission takes place. Both crosslinking and degradation may occur in the same polymer simultaneously, although usually ono process Size: 1MB.

POLYMER GRAFTING AND CROSSLINKING We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to edit a book in the grafting and crosslinking arena. While several excellent books on polymers are available, our experience in research over the years has revealed the need for a book which emphasizes the basics as well as applied orientation for beginners.

It does. Crosslinking in polymers means that the macromolecules will not only be physically bonded by the entanglements and intermolecular interactions. It means that the different polymer chains will have covalent bonds between them. Charlesby 1 Introduction Main Chain Scission of Polymers _____ _ _____ _ 1. The book presents papers that discuss experimental techniques to study polymer network structure; deduction of information on network structure from theoretical considerations; interpenetrating polymer networks; crosslinked polymers for high temperature applications; a novel class of polyurethanes; crosslinking agents; and the influence of.

The most well-known example of crosslinking is the vulcanisation of natural latex or butadiene polymers with sulphur, an accelerator and zinc oxide. The process is complicated and the crosslinked product tends to discolour. Functional groups are introduced into the binder polymers to make self-crosslinking systems, which are initiated by heating.

In chemistry and biology a cross-link is a bond that links one polymer chain to another. These links may take the form of covalent bonds or ionic bonds and the polymers can be either synthetic polymers or natural polymers (such as proteins).

In polymer chemistry "cross-linking" usually refers to the use of cross-links to promote a change in the polymers' physical properties. The aim of the study was to develop an antimicrobial hydrogel wound dressing by means of radiation-initiated crosslinking of hydrophilic polymers, i.e. Buy Crosslinking and Scission in Polymers by O.

A new thermally reactive monomer has been designed and synthesized that brings novel crosslinking chemistry to high-performance polymers. This monomer (XTA) is a derivative of terephthalic acid and was based on the thermal chemistry of benzocyclobutene.

Various model compounds have been synthesized. Elastomers are susceptible to chemical ageing, i.e., scission and cross-linking, at high temperatures. This thermally driven ageing process affects their mechanical properties and leads to limited operating time. Continuous and intermittent stress relaxation measurements were conducted on ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) and hydrogenated nitrile butadiene Author: Maha Zaghdoudi, Anja Kömmling, Matthias Jaunich, Dietmar Wolff.

Chain scission is a term used in polymer chemistry describing the degradation of a polymer main chain. It is often caused by thermal stress (heat) or ionizing radiation (e.g. light, UV radiation or gamma radiation), often involving chain cleavage, the polymer chain is broken at a random point in the backbone to form two - mostly still highly molecular - fragments.

Thoughts About “Crosslinking” 1 These possessed number-average molecular weight on the order of 20, forming solutions with about times greater. GPC is very useful to track the crosslinking and chain scission of polymers during ageing.

But mostly the crosslinking and chain scission occurs at. Crosslinking improves the performance, strength, and durability of polymers.
